 2. Amaryllis. Ce nom vient d’un mot grec (amarysso) qui signifie briller, et convient parfaitement à l’espèce que nous avons représentée, et qui est l’Amaryllis-a-fleur-en-croix, autrement dite Lis-saint-Jacques, Amaryllis formosissima, Lin., parceque sa fleur, d’un rouge velouté et parsemé d’or, ressemble un peu à l’ordre espagnol de St.-Jacques de Calatrava. Sa racine est un oignon qu’il faut garantir contre le froid. On le multiplie des caïeux qu’il donne, et qui, mis en terre sableuse et non fumée, rapportent fleurs au bout de trois ans.
